Conference calls on Congress to press the administrations in Northern Ireland and in the Republic of Ireland to urgently review the regulation of the independent care sector. This review should examine the standards of training of staff working in the sector and their pay and conditions of employment. There is widespread evidence that some private sector providers fail to provide proper training for staff and the conditions of employment in some parts of the sector are so poor that it results in a huge turn over of staff thereby not providing consistency of care for our elderly. Conference rejects the idea that the provision of vital public services such as care of the elderly is best provided by private sector operators. Conference is also concerned that the well being of vulnerable groups who depend on public services is jeopardised by reckless and ruthless private employers in the independent care sector.
