Motion no: 6
Conference calls on those in authority, in both jurisdictions and at EU level, to accept the complete failure of the austerity recipe as a response to the economic challenge. This has been spectacularly demonstrated through the experience in the Republic of Ireland over the past four years with appalling consequences for society generally. Apart from the suffering imposed on working people and those most dependent on public services it is becoming increasingly obvious that it will not even serve the interests of the international creditors it is designed to appease, as it will inevitably result in default with dramatically uncertain outcomes for stability in the entire region. Conference urgently calls for the abandonment of this approach in the light of the lessons of the failed experiment and for the implementation of policies designed to facilitate job creation and growth, offering hope in place of despair thus securing stability and restoring prosperity. Conference directs the incoming Executive Council to continue working with trade unionists across Europe to persuade civil society and Governments of the urgent necessity of embarking upon a fairer, better way, whilst simultaneously campaigning against the dismantlement of the employment protection infrastructure in both jurisdictions on this island.
