This ICTU Congress recognises that, due to the impact of the economic crisis, thousands of workers in the retail sector continue to face the threat of redundancy and under-employment. Congress recognises that the economic downturn has had a devastating impact on workers in all walks of life. Even large chains are not immune, as demonstrated when B&Q Ireland recently appointed examiners, and when major firms such as Comet and HMV went into administration earlier this year. 50,000 workers have lost their jobs in the Irish retail sector during the recession. This equates to a sixth of the retail workforce. As employers look to cut costs, even those workers whose jobs have remained safe are often finding that fewer hours are available. Empty shops on the high street are a clear sign of the problems being faced in the non-food retail sector. Congress believes that ICTU campaigns must speak to workers in both private and public secto rs as the recession is hitting workers throughout the economy. Congress believes that it is essential that we get the message out to workers fearful for their jobs that the best protection is provided by trade union membership and representation. Congress applauds the work of trade unions who are organising in the private sector. Congress agrees that the ICTU will fully support the efforts to organise the private sector.
