Motion no: 24
Congress notes with concern the disproportionate impact upon our young people by the recession in Ireland, North and South. In the Republic, the number of young people (under 25) in the labour force reduced by 50% between 2008 and the present. A disturbing aspect of this trend was that the number of long term unemployed young people increased year on year.
At present young people on the Live Register for 12 months or more represent almost half of those listed. Congress is concerned that there is a growing group of young people who are not in Employment, Education or Training on the Island of Ireland. The Republic is currently the 4th worst country in the EU for this. Congress instructs the Executive Committee to consider the implications of this motion and to bring forward an action plan addressing the needs of young people, to ensure they have more choices and therefore more opportunities to improve their employability and long term life chances.
