Motion no: 32
Retired Workers in the Private and Public Sector have made a huge contribution to Irish society during the economic crisis. Many help their children with mortgages and mortgage repayments. In the absence of decent and affordable childcare many of our older people have provided free childcare for grandchildren. Many pensions have been reduced, yet pensioners/retired workers face extra charges such as property tax, bin charges and increasing insurance costs. Unlike those in full employment pensions/retired workers cannot seek pay increases to compensate for the increases of the cost of living. Conference, therefore calls for: The repeal of the FEMPI legislation and the restoration of the losses imposed on public sector pensioners/retired workers. The continuation of its campaign to protect private sector pensions. Congress should continue to make strong representations to Government to facilitate unions to represent the interests of retired workers.
