Motion no: 51
Conference expresses its deep concern at the increased sectarian tension and polarisation of communities. This has not been assisted by the current political impasse. In response Congress reiterates its total opposition to sectarianism in all its forms. In addition to the increased sectarian tensions there has also been a rise in other forms of hate crime - against the LGBT community, ethnic minorities, refugees and asylum seekers. This rise in hate crime has not been limited just to Northern Ireland. The current political vacuum will only give the opportunity to fuel sectarianism, xenophobia and other hate crimes which the trade union movement has proudly stood rmly against for the last 50 years. We must not allow the most regressive elements of society to drag us back to the past. Conference therefore calls on the Executive Council to: Ensure that all forms of hate crimes are condemned by ICTU by issuing unequivocal statements against each and every attack and that the power of the trade union movement is drawn upon to campaign in support of those who are under attack Promote the pursuit of training and education via af liates to educate and reinforce why this type of behaviour and criminal activity unacceptable and cannot be tolerated in a civilised society; Promote unity of all workers in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland irrespective of community allegiances.
