Motion no: 18

Congress is alarmed by the blatant disregard in too many post-primary schools of the Health, Safety and Welfare of teachers, support staff and students in practical subjects.

Congress is deeply concerned that in response to requests by some principals a circular was released by the Department of Education which has provided a ‘green light’ to employers to ignore the class size provisions placing pupils and staff at risk.

Congress deplores the failure of the Department of Education and employers to have due regard for their duty of care for employees and pupils and to actively monitor schools compliance with health and safety provisions, specifically risk assessments.

Congress calls on the ICTU to:

(i) raise awareness of the legislation in relation to health and safety in the workplace; and

(ii) campaign for health and safety compliance across schools and other workplaces.
