Congress and Bord na Móna Unions Hold Discussions with Minister for Climate Action on Just Transition
The Irish Congress of Trade Unions and a delegation of Bord na Móna union representatives met today (Sept 19) with the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Energy, Richard Bruton TD, to discuss proposals focused on securing workers livelihoods and the future of Midlands communities, in the context of delivering a Just Transition to a low carbon economy.
Speaking after the meeting, Congress General Secretary Patricia King said the discussions had been positive and looked forward to "ongoing constructive engagement and dialogue" in order to ensure that the Bord na Móna workers and their communities could contribute fully to the delivery of a Just Transition, in the Midlands and nationally.
"At the heart of Just Transition is the idea that the shift to a low carbon economy is managed in a way that supports those affected and helps delivers new and replacement employment opportunities. The case of Bord na Móna will serve as a litmus test for official policy on the transition to a low carbon economy and, as such, can help instil confidence across the energy sector and elsewhere, if it is handled correctly," Ms King said.
