The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has called on all affiliated trade unions and members of the wider public to support the rally for Clerys workers that is to be held in Dublin tomorrow (Tuesday, June 16).
The rally has been organised by SIPTU and will take place outside the O"Connell Street department store between 12 noon and 2pm.
Congress General Secretary Patricia King said that the Clerys staff had been 'treated outrageously" and deserved the widest possible public support.
"Congress would question whether that treatment fully adheres to the law, as laid out in the Protection of Terms of Employment Act (1977) and we are asking Minister Bruton to investigate this through the Authorised Officer," Ms King said.
She also said that the case highlighted the necessity for an urgent review of the Insolvency Act to ensure that no workers could ever be treated in this manner again.
