A delegation from the Congress Housing Committee met (Sept 13) with Sinn Fein spokesperson on Housing, Eoin O"Broin TD, as part of the Congress campaign to press for urgent action to tackle the crisis.
The Housing Committee was established to press for action and policy change in order to address the spiralling crisis. The Committee is comprised of representatives from a wide range of affiliate unions, representing workers in all sectors of the economy.
The Congress delegation to was headed by Congress President Sheila Nunan and General Secretary Patricia King.
The Congress campaign group has sought meetings with the housing policy spokespersons of all major political parties and groupings, along with a range of local authorities in areas badly affected by the crisis.
Speaking afterwards, Sheila Nunan thanked Deputy O"Broin (above) for having met with Congress and noted that the housing and homeless crisis "is now the defining issue for government and for wider society. The impact is felt all across the economy, as workers income is squeezed by higher rents and prices and untold damage is being done to working families who cannot access decent housing.
"Unless this is tackled, we will pay a higher cost in the long-run in terms to damage to social cohesion and living standards, not to mention future growth prospects."
