The Executive Council of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions will not issue any recommendation on the forthcoming referendum on the Fiscal Compact, it was decided today (April 25). The decision was taken at a meeting of the Executive Council at which the issue was discussed and debated.
It was agreed that individual unions could advise their members on the referendum, on foot of their own deliberations on the issue.
A Congress document on the key issues involved - prepared by General Secretary David Begg - has been distributed to unions in order to assist in this process (see attached).
The Executive Council also strongly endorsed the proposition that the development of a growth and investment programme was the key issue facing both the Irish economy and society.
