Irish Congress of Trade Unions General Secretary Patricia King today (May 23) warmly welcomed the overwhelming yes vote in the marriage equality referendum and paid tribute to the many trade unions and activists "who were in the forefront of this drive for a more equal Ireland."
Ms King said: "Congress stongly backed a yes vote and campaigned to make it a reality. That was the right thing to do and reflects the very strong commitment of the trade union movement to equality and our key role in achieving greater fairness and justice, over many decades."
Ms King paid tribute to the many trade unions that actively backed the campaign at a national and grassroot level.
Seamus Dooley co-convenor of Trade Unionists for Civil Marriage Equality said: 'today, Ireland hung out its brighest colours. Let us be in no doubt that this is a vote not just for civil marriage equality, but also for greater equality across Irish society," he said.
Ethel Buckley, co-convenor of Trade Unionists for Civil Marraige Equality, said that that having achieved this magnificent result, trade unions "will continue our fight for justice in every sphere of society."
