The Women's Committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions agreed today to support the Candle Lit Vigil in Solidarity with Magdalene Survivors and their Families
Having made representations to the Minister for Justice on the issue in the past, we anxiously await proceedings in the Dáil later today.
Justice will only be seen to be done if the Government makes a full apology to the Magdalene survivors, backed up by credible redress package of measures that can never in reality make up for the suffering experienced by the women. Their incarceration and forced, unpaid labour, and the failure to inspect the laundries to ensure compliance with even basic workers" rights is a stain on the nation. Any credible package should include lump sum compensation, pensions, healthcare and counselling, housing services and advice, as sought by the Justice for Magdalene group.
