The Irish Congress of Trade Unions has welcomed the election of Ireland to the U.N.Security Council.
General Secretary Patricia said "in congratulating the Government it is only right that we acknowledge the tireless work of all involved in securing support for Ireland's candidacy, With this honour comes great responsibility. Ireland must honour its obligations to maintaining and defending human rights at home and on the world stage. We must set an example in areas of social and economic policy including homelesness, the eradication of gender inequality , climate justice and employment rights.
Patricia King added 'the incoming government must display moral leadership by supporting the Occupied Territories Bill and by unambiguous support for the Palestinian people by ending Ireland's trading in goods and services imported from Israeli-occupied territories".
