There was a huge show of solidarity by thousands of protestors, who marched in support of Palestinians, through Dublin city centre on Saturday afternoon last.
The rally was organised by the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign with the backing of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions, the Irish Council for Civil Liberties , the National Womens Council, and over 70 civil society groups representing all strands of society.
The crowd stretched from Parnell Square to Westmorland Street and beyond, in one of the biggest-ever protests for Palestine in Ireland. A sea of Palestinian flags and trade union banners were held aloft by marchers who called for an end to genocide in Gaza.
The rally was part of a global day of action with other events being held around the world to highlight the humanitarian crisis. 100 days into the war the death toll in Gaza is reported to be more than 24,000. The IDF bombardment of the enclave began after Hamas militants killed over 1,200 civilians and soldiers in Southern Israel on October 7th and took hundreds of hostages many of whom remain in captivity.
Among those in attendance were Congress General Secretary, Owen Reidy, Deputy General Secretary, Gerry Murphy, and Congress President, Justin McCamphill. They gathered at the Garden of Remembrance before marching with union members to the Department of Foreign Affairs, at St.Stephen’s Green where a rally and speeches took place.
