Following a call for solidarity via the ITUC, Congress wrote to the Korean authorities regarding the KCTU President Han Sang-gyun and the likelihood of him facing an 8-year imprisonment for combined charges against him by the Korean government.
His 5 year sentence was since announced by the Korean court and there will be another trial on 19 July. It has been described by the ITUC as a travesty of justice.
Korean Public Service and Transport Workers" Union (KPTU) Vice President Cho Sung-deok is also facing charges arising from the 14 November demonstration. Prosecutors are seeking a five-year prison sentence. PSI have launched an online appeal on Cho, Sung-deok, the vice president of the KPTU, Korean Public Services and Transportation Workers" Union. Friday 24 June also marked 100 days since 41-year-old Han Kwang-ho, a union organizer at a Hyundai auto supplier in South Korea, took his own life. Han, an elected official for a branch of the Korean Metal Workers" Union, suffered five years of intimidation, repression and attacks in retaliation for his trade union activities at YooSung Enterprise, a key supplier for Hyundai Motor Company.
