The Fifth Annual Global Solidarity Summer School – organised by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions – will this year hear from two Bahraini human rights" activists, both of whom were imprisoned and tortured by authorities during the 2011 "Bahraini uprising".
The Global Solidarity Summer School runs from Friday, August 23 to Saturday, August 24.
Jalila Mohammed Ridha al-Salman, a teacher and vice president of the Bahrain Teachers' Association (BTA) and Dr Rula Al-Saffar, President of the Bahrain Nursing Society were among thousands arrested without charge by the authorities following a wave of protests that swept the country in 2011.
Both were tortured while in custody, while Dr Al-Saffar was refused permission to return to her job upon release.
They are among a number of guest speakers and experts who are appearing at the 2013 Global Solidarity Summer School which will be opened by Minister of State for Trade & Development, Joe Costello TD.
The Summer School will also feature participants and speakers from Denmark, Australia, Iraq and Sri Lanka.
The 2013 Summer School takes place in the CWU Conference Centre, William Norton House on Dublin's North Circular Road.
