Congress notes the UK Supreme Court ruling against Uber, the taxi-hailing app firm, that could have far-reaching implications for workers in the gig economy. The court concluded Uber drivers should be classed as workers, not independent contractors.
General Secretary Patricia King said "Congress welcomes this outcome which underpins the arguments ICTU has consistently made that the treatment of these workers as self-employed is 'Bogus' and should be outlawed. Hopefully, Irish authorities will take account of this v important UK judgment".
In relation to Northern Ireland the onus is now on the Department of the Economy to take advantage of the Supreme Court judgment so as workers will benefit from legislation that now needs to be passed in the Assembly.
