Workers' Memorial Day Monday 29 April 2024

March 04, 2024
Memorial Day

Congress, along with the Government, the Health and Safety Authority (HSA), Ibec, and the CIF will collectively mark Workers’ Memorial Day Ireland on April 29th at the national and annual commemorative event to remember people who died,  were injured, made ill and bereaved through work-related accidents. Workers Memorial

Together, we invite you to join us at 09.30 AM on Monday 29th April to support this national day of commemoration. We are also asking your union to mark the day by considering a range of suggested initiatives, listed overleaf.

Workers' Memorial Day - a day to remember the dead

Congress General Secretary Owen Reidy will be joined by Conor O’Brien CEO of the Health & Safety Authority and Minister Neale Richmond TD who will lay a wreath on behalf of the State to remember those workers we have lost.

Please join us to mark this important occasion:

Date:    Monday 29th April 2024
Venue:    Garden of Remembrance, Parnell Square, Dublin 1
Time:        Gather from 09.20, event starts at 0.930-10.30

In Ireland in the ten years between 2014 and 2023, 459 people died in work-related incidents, and many thousands more were severely injured or made ill.

In 2023 alone, 43 people died in work-related incidents.

These unacceptable figures can be reduced through a combined and intensified effort by all concerned. By working together and promoting the practice of safety and health in workplaces throughout Ireland we will achieve a significant drop in these dreadful numbers. We all have a responsibility to make sure that happens.

Congress is asking all affiliated unions to encourage events in workplaces to mark the day.

There is a wide range of initiatives that unions can consider including:

  • Get involved in creating awareness by using the official Workers’ Memorial Day Ireland logo on your website, social media presence, presentations, email signatures, displays, and in offices and workplaces. The logo is available at
  • Website/Newsletter content
  • Social media content. For example, take a photo of your activity or event and share it on social media. Please use the hashtag #WorkersMemorialDay and #IWMD23 on any posts and tag relevant organisations
  • Add an overlay to your union or personal X or Facebook account at https://twibbon.com/Support/workers-memorial-day-11
  • In-house training sessions or a toolbox talk
  • Guest speaker presentation to staff
  • Press release to your local/national media marking your event or the day itself
  • Your ceremonial event or minute silence to mark the occasion. Workers Memorial
